A British hiker recently captured the moment a terrifying avalanche hit his tour group last weekend in the Tian Shan mountains of Kyrgystan.

Posting a video on his Instagram account, Brit Harry Shimmin, 25, describes how his group of 10 hiked through the Tian Shan Mountains when they heard "the sound of deep ice", before look up to see the wall of snow starting towards them.

Behind the rock, hikers describe, it feels like being in a blizzard. When it was over, he said, an adrenaline rush hit him. It was covered with only a small layer of snow, minus any scratches.

Camera footage captured snow crashing downhill in Oakley, Utah, hours after another one killed four people 80 miles away.

its cruelty makes viewers too sad and angry said: “It's a numbers game. With more and more people in the back country and more an more people tempting fate, it's bound to happen. I have lived in Colorado all of my life and the number of people putting themselves in these situations doesn't surprise me. Unfortunately, they also strain the SAR services(a rescue isn't cheap) that do come to their rescue, due to their arrogance and actions. Accidents happen, but more people are putting themselves purposefully and needlessly in these situations. So, when it happens and people die, it never surprises me and my sympathy level is pretty low”

When in the mountains, avalanches are threats that need to be prepared for and taken seriously. Around the globe, an estimated 150 people are killed every year from avalanches. In order to reduce fatalities and to protect villages and roads, people attempt to predict and prevent avalanches. Accurate avalanche prediction requires an experienced avalanche forecaster who often works both in the field to gather snowpack information and in the office with sophisticated tools such as remotely accessed weather data, detailed historical weather and avalanche databases, weather models, and avalanche-forecasting models. Avalanche forecasters combine their historical knowledge of past conditions with their knowledge of the affected terrain, current weather, and current snowpack conditions to predict when and where avalanches are most likely to occur. Such forecasting work typically takes place along mountain highways, adjacent to potentially affected villages, at ski areas, and in terrain heavily used for backcountry skiing and snowmobiling.
